May 2006 - Family Snap

Around the tasting room walls of the Ngatarawa winery are old Corban family black and whites, wonderful shots. Some taken by Marti Friedlander, others by Khaleel Assid Corban in the 1920's. One of Khaleel's is a picture I'd seen before and it always reels me in. Five little Corbans are lying under vines festooned with plump bunches in a Corban's Henderson vineyard. One of the kids is Alex, father of Ngatarawa boss Alwyn Corban. The little boys' extraordinary eyes, as large as the grapes above, stare roundly from faces dark with suntan and levantine heritage.

The picture has a Family of Man quality, and if you'd never seen it before you'd probably never pick it as having been taken in New Zealand in the 1920's. These days, Alwyn no doubt looks at that 20's yield with a mixture of horror and envy. He also looks content enough with the way the noble rot is attacking his 2006 Riesling.
